At Thirsk Tourist Information we are committed to respecting and protecting your privacy. We explain here why and when we collect personal information, how we keep it secure and under what conditions we may disclose it to others.

Who are we?

We are Thirsk Tourist Information, a company limited by guarantee (no. 7517646). This means that it is not for profit and instead of share capital or shareholders it has Members. In our case all Members are also volunteers for the organisation. Nobody, including directors, is paid. The registered address is 93A Market Place, Thirsk YO7 1EY.

How do we collect information from you?

We obtain information about you when you use the visitthirsk.uk website, contact us about products and services, subscribe to our publicity services, make a donation, register to receive local news or sell us something. We also collect information from public sources.

What type of information is collected from you?

Personal information we collect might include your name, address, email address, IP (internet) address and which web pages are accessed and when.

How is your information used?

We may use your information to:

  • notify you of our services;
  • publicise your business, club or organisation (if relevant);
  • send communications which you have requested;
  • carry out our obligations arising under contracts between us;
  • ask for comments about the services we provide.

We are legally required to hold some types of information to fulfil our statutory obligations (for example the details of our volunteers). We review all personal information regularly and request your review and correction of any information that we hold about you. We will hold it on our system for as long as necessary to complete the relevant activity or contract.

Who has access to your information?

We will not sell, rent or give your information to third parties or share your information for marketing purposes unless required by law. Examples of that include compliance with a court order, if it is necessary for prevention of crime, to enforce our terms of use or to protect the rights, property or safety of our supporters and customers. However, we will aim to ensure that your privacy rights continue to be protected.

We may pass your information to our third party service providers for the purposes of completing tasks and providing services to you on our behalf. For example when you use our secure online payment, sales and donation pages, your payment is taken by a third party payment processor (WorldPay or PayPal) which specialises in the secure capture and processing of credit/debit card transactions. Another example is when we use a third party Internet company (Linode) to store and process details to assist communication with you. However, where we use third party service providers we have contracts in place that require them to keep your information secure.

Your choices, updates and access to your information

You have a choice about whether or not you wish to receive information from us. We will not contact you for marketing purposes by email, phone, text message or post unless you have given your prior consent.

You can send us changes of preferences, email address or other information by emailing admin@visitthirsk.uk, phoning 01845 518187 or visiting Thirsk’s information office. We will also delete all or part of your information on request.

The accuracy of your information is important to us. From time to time we may send the information we hold about you along with an update request. At any other time you have the right to ask for a copy of your information.

Security

Security precautions in place to protect the loss, misuse or alteration of your information. We take steps to ensure that all data you send is treated securely. This includes personal information and credit or debit card details. All web traffic is encrypted and protected with TLS (AES 256). To show this, on all pages a lock icon appears on your web browser (e.g. Chrome, Edge, Safari or Internet Explorer).

When you give us personal information we make our best effort to ensure its security. Access is available only to trained volunteers. When you give us personal information on paper, or we need to print it, this is shredded after processing.

Cookies & profiling

Like many websites, the visitthirsk.uk website uses Google cookies. 'Cookies' are small pieces of information stored in your computer to allow the website to recognise your device when you visit. They collect statistical data about your browsing actions. This helps us to improve our website and deliver a better service. If you are signed into a Google account when you visit, Google inc. may recognise that you personally have used our website.

When making payments, other cookies help the website function correctly.

On some web pages, such as to provide a map of the area around you, we ask for your geographical position. This can only happen if you have given such a permission on your device.

It is possible to switch off cookies by setting your browser preferences but turning off cookies of may result in a loss of functionality when using our website.

Our website contains links to websites run by other organisations. This privacy notice applies only to the visitthirsk.uk website. We cannot be responsible for the privacy policies and practices of other sites even if you access them using links from our website.

In addition, if you linked to our website from a third party site, we cannot be responsible for the privacy policies and practices of the owners and operators of that third party site.

CCTV cameras

Thirsk’s information office has two closed circuit cameras recording continuously. The only use of the pictures is for the prevention and investigation of crime. We also have a public webcam overlooking Thirsk Market Place which is not recorded.

16 or Under

We are concerned to protect the privacy of children aged 16 or under. If you are aged 16 or under‚ please get your parent/guardian's permission beforehand whenever you provide us with personal information.
