Housed in the 18th century birthplace of cricketer Thomas Lord, founder of Lord's Cricket Ground, Thirsk Museum offers eight period rooms with walk-round displays reflecting and recording the life and times of this ancient market town lying at the heart of the fertile Vale of Mowbray and made famous as the 'Darrowby' of the James Herriot books.
Entrance FREE but donation appreciated.
Thirsk Museum is entirely volunteer run. It is open from before Easter to the early November.
Open Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri & Sat from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Open Wed 10.30am-1pm. Last admissions half hour before closing.
It offers the visitor unique glimpses of bygone days in the stories of the Feather family, emigrants to New Zealand, of WW1 recruit William Stephenson, Canadian pilots in WW2, the terrible fate of Thomas Bushy, of our Saxon giant, and many more. Family and local history enquiries welcomed.
Accessible Ramped access to ground floor displays only.
Children welcome There is much on open display to look at and handle. There will be walk-round quiz sheets for our Jubilee exhibition.

From Thirsk Tourist Information proceed westward along pavement to Kirkgate - turn right.
